Volunteer of the Month

Pam Bratton

Meador Staffing Services

How long have you been a member of the Austin Human Resource Management Association (AHRMA)?

I have been a member since either 1979 or 80 (too long to remember).  I remember that JP Kirksey and I were both young back then.

What attracts you to do volunteer work related to legislative issues both with AHRMA and the Texas State Council?

I volunteer in legislative affairs, because I believe that as HR Professionals we are the voice of reason in legislation, policy, and rulemaking.  Legislators rarely have HR experience and do not realize the impact of their potential legislation.

What has been your most rewarding experience as an AHRMA volunteer?

Over the many years of volunteering in various AHRMA roles, I think I love the legislative action days when first time visitors to the capitol get to meet their legislators.  I often accompany these "new advocates" to meet their representative and it is rewarding to see them get the hang of advocacy.

What additional thoughts or comments would you like to share about serving as an AHRMA volunteer?

I am a believer that if you belong to an organization you have a responsibility to be involved.  If a member is just paying dues, they are not fulfilling their obligation as a member and will never get their money's worth.  If any member wants to be more involved in advocacy, just call me.
