Workplace flexibility has become a key business strategy to leverage the talents and skills of today’s increasingly diverse, aging, and multi-generational workforce. In this session, you will learn how flexible work arrangements such as job sharing, flexible scheduling, phased retirement, and telecommuting can drive employee engagement, productivity, retention, and benefit your organization’s bottom line. You will also examine key HR strategies for implementing flexibility as well as legal issues to consider. And you will hear about new resources and opportunities as a result of SHRM’s partnership with the Families and Work Institute, including the “When Work Works” initiative.
Lisa K. Horn, Co-Leader, SHRM’s Workplace Flexibility Initiative, Senior Government Relations Advisor
Lisa Horn serves as the Co-Leader for SHRM’s Workplace Flexibility Initiative and partnership with the Families and Work Institute (FWI). She is responsible for the overall direction and execution of the Society’s partnership with FWI, including outreach efforts to SHRM affiliates, development of products and services for the membership, and coordination with SHRM’s public relations campaign, We Know Next.
As a respected source for research and trend data on flexible work environments, Lisa is one of SHRM’s primary spokespeople on workplace flexibility, regularly interviewed by the media and sought out as a speaker for human resource audiences. Lisa also oversees the organization’s workplace flexibility public policy efforts and advises on the Society’s workplace flexibility educational offerings.
Prior to joining SHRM in 2004, Lisa worked for the U.S. House of Representatives under former Representatives Bill Barrett (R-NE) and Tom Osborne (R-NE). A native Nebraskan, Lisa began her career as a senatorial aide in the Nebraska Legislature, while completing a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
When Work Works: A Panel Discussion Moderated by Lisa Horn
Creating effective and flexible workplaces to make work “work” better for both the bottom line and for employees is a key business strategy. In this session, hear from business leaders and HR professionals from organizations that have led the charge in Workplace Effectiveness and Flexibility and/or other best practice awards. Panelists will discuss their innovative programs and share keys to success, lessons learned, and the overall impact of offering flexible workplace arrangements.
Traci Callan, CPP, Whole Foods Market, Global Executive Director, TMS Operations
Traci is the Global Executive Coordinator – TMS (Team Member Services) Operations for Whole Foods Market. She began her career in Payroll in Houston, Texas in 1992 and in 1998 moved to Austin, Texas to join Whole Foods Market as a Payroll Tax Specialist. She has held several other positions within Payroll Services prior to her current position. She spent a brief time on the Information Technology Team as a Business Analyst on the Payroll functional side during the PeopleSoft HRMS implementation. She moved back to Payroll Services when the opportunity to become the Assistant Payroll Operations Team Leader became available in 2001. She was promoted to Payroll Operations Team Leader in 2003 and was promoted to Director of Payroll Services in June 2007. In 2005 she was awarded the Global Support All*Star Award and was a Global All*Star Honorable Mention the same year. She was promoted to her current role in February 2011. And has played a lead role during the integration process for several acquisitions Whole Foods Market has made; particularly the Wild Oats acquisition in 2007. In 2008 she received a Special Performer recognition for the leadership role she provided during the Wild Oats acquisition. She is also a Certified Payroll Professional.
In her current leadership role, her teams (Timekeeping, Payroll and Benefit Operations and Payroll Tax & Compliance) are responsible for the Payroll Services and Benefits processes for 69,000 Team Members in the United States (39 states), Canada (Ontario and British Columbia) and the United Kingdom. She works with multiple regions within Whole Foods Market to monitor and consult on various compliance items related to FLSA, garnishments, unemployment and income tax as well as overseeing the Electronic I9 and E-Verify programs for the company. She is also one of the Executive Sponsors of the Whole Foods Market Diversity & Inclusion Council.
Michael, J. DePonte, Partner and Litigation Manager of Jackson Lewis LLP
Mr. DePonte is Board Certified in both Labor and Employment Law and Civil Trial Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. Of the approximately 90,000 attorneys that are licensed in the State of Texas, only 29 are Board Certified in both of these areas. Mr. DePonte has extensive litigation and trial background having tried numerous cases in state and federal courts in Texas. Mr. DePonte’s practice focuses on the litigation of employment claims, wage and hour claims and collective actions, class actions, and civil rights claims under state and federal law. Mr. DePonte has defended national and regional employers on a broad range of employment-related issues including class actions. He has represented employers before numerous federal and state agencies, and has handled trials and appeals in federal and state courts.
Mr. DePonte also provides his clients with general advice and counseling on a broad range of employment and labor issues, prepares and presents training seminars to clients, and has prepared materials for and presented lectures at multiple employment law seminars and human resources workshops.
Following his completion of law school, Mr. DePonte accepted a position as an attorney with a private firm in the United States Virgin Islands where he is licensed to practice in the territorial and federal courts. Upon returning to the states, he accepted a position as an Assistant Attorney General for the State of Texas in the Law Enforcement Defense Division where he represented state law enforcement agencies and officials in civil rights and employment litigation and appeals. Mr. DePonte has successfully tried and arbitrated numerous cases and represented clients at all levels from administrative investigations and proceedings to the United States Supreme Court.
Mr. DePonte received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Texas at Austin in 1992, a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Texas at the Permian Basin in 1993, and earned his Juris Doctor from South Texas College of Law 1997. Mr. DePonte is admitted to practice law in Texas, Colorado, United States Virgin Islands, U.S. District Courts (Northern, Southern, Eastern and Western Districts of Texas, Virgin Islands and Colorado), the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, and the United States Supreme Court.
ErinTeter, SPHR, Director, Human Resources at Sage
Erin is the Director, Human Resources at Sage Software and Consulting Solutions. Erin has held her Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) certificate since 2007. Erin has13 years of experience as an HR business partner and generalist,including experience in employee recruitment and retention, staff development,performance management, conflict resolution, benefits and compensation, HR policies integration and development, and legal compliance. Erin was the key to the launch and design of Sage's workplace flexibility program. Erin is an active member of SHRM, WilcoHR and AHRMA organizations.
Erin has a wonderful & very supportive husband, Steven and two children,Benjamin & Emily. In her spare time, she enjoys spending timeoutdoors, cooking and watching baseball.
